Apparently Some Stereotypes are OK

Wendy McElroy writes on Foxnews.com about fraternity perceptions on college campuses. A concerted effort on many college campuses is being made to remove them. The reasons cited deal with drinking, date rape and general bad behavior.

During college I joined Kappa Alpha Order. It was one of the best things I did. Were we a bunch of drunken neanderthals? Some of us. Were any different from guys outside of the fraternal system? No. I saw guys, who were non-Greek, getting into bar fights, picking up women, etc. We were no different than others of our gender.

The reason non-Greeks do not like those inside fraternities(and sororities) are more because of stereotypes. Animal House is the usual example of what a fraternity is like. Greek organizations tend to be selective and secretive. They tend to pull in people similar to themselves. That is really the problem non-Greeks have. The feeling of being excluded has more to do with it than what goes on inside. Secret initiations, pledging, etc. in any organization leads to outsiders fearing them. See the Free Masons, Knights Templar, etc.

I hope fraternal organizations are not done away with. Although there are negatives as with any organization, the positives far outweigh them.
